Monster (anime)

Monster is one of my favorite anime. There was a neat moment when Caesar's "Gallic War Commentaries" played a part in episode 26. But was it accurate or not?

***

1. The book is definitely a Loeb Classical Library. The actual Loeb edition contains both Latin text and an English translation. But this book had only Latin in it, so the guy had to ask others to translate it for him.

2.

3.

He flips through the pages and pic. 2 and 3 appear twice. The order is mixed up. Pic. 3 should be first because it's chapters 1 and 3 of Book 5. Chapter 2 is missing. Pic. 2 are chapters 7-9. Chapters 4-6 are missing.

4.

This is supposed to be a new page, but it's actually chapter 3 from pic. 3. Utinam ne umuquam deficere possint! is not in the actual book. Pic. 3 has the original Latin text ("... and informs him of the things which were going on among the Treviri"), while pic. 4 replaces it with a new line in brackets. Two different characters translate it as "I can't deceive him anymore!" (even though there is no such word as umuquam in Latin). Both completely ignore the underlined text before the bracket ("... and not revolt from the alliance of the Roman people").

5.

Again, the page on the right is chapter 3. So this shot should've looked like pic. 3, but as you can see, the left page is completely different from before. The left page is actually the second half of chapter 1 and chapter 2, which had been missing before. Locum convenire iubet is the end of the sentence, not the start of a new one. And there should be one more paragraph at the end of chapter 2.

It wasn't perfect, but they did try to recreate it more or less accurately. The cover is definitely Loeb, the text is Caesar's. I would consider the new line over the original Latin to be the only serious deviation. "I can't deceive him anymore" doesn't make any sense in the context of "The Gallic War."
